A DOSE OF HAPPY CHEMICALS EVERY DAY
Strong families grow with joyful rituals
By Rahul Kapoor
I've passionately coached thousands of families on how to activate their body's natural happy chemicals using simple, daily practices. I call this the DOSE formula - a powerful acronym that stands for four key neurochemicals linked to happiness and emotional wellbeing:
- D for Dopamine – the chemical of achievement and reward. It's released when we set goals, start something new, or complete even small tasks. In families, it shows up when someone is encouraged to try something new - a hobby, a skill, or even a game. The joy of progress fuels this powerful brain chemical.
- O for Oxytocin – the bonding hormone, generated through trust, hugs, affection, and meaningful connection. Something as simple as hugging your child in the morning, or placing a reassuring hand on a parent's shoulder, releases oxytocin and builds emotional security.
- S for Serotonin – the chemical of appreciation and significance. It flows when we feel valued or appreciated. A genuine compliment or expression of gratitude creates serotonin in both the giver and receiver.
- E for Endorphins – nature's painkillers, released during physical activity and laughter. A shared dance, a long walk, a comedy night, or simply being silly together can work wonders.
Now consider the flip side. Family stress - arguments, pressure, unspoken expectations triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline, the body's stress chemicals. Over time, these can damage relationships, health, and emotional harmony.
But here's the magic: just like we create stress responses, we also have the inbuilt capacity to generate healing and joy, by intentionally releasing our happy chemicals.
In my Charan Sparsh - Strong Families Grow Together program I've guided families around the world to apply DOSE. The results have been heart-warming.
One family, where physical affection was rare, decided to create a morning ritual: the children would touch their parents' feet as a mark of respect, and the parents would respond with a warm hug. That simple hug, just 20 seconds of connection, brought them closer than years of words ever could.
Another family started an "Appreciation Circle" at dinner, where each member expressed one positive thing about another person. The energy in the room shifted in just a few days. Conflicts reduced. Smiles increased.
When sadness, anxiety, or even depression creeps into a family space which is increasingly common these days, one of the best responses is to encourage each person to start something new or do what they love. Maybe it's dance. Maybe it's swimming. A grandmother learning English. A father exploring meditation. A teen starting a passion project. These activities release dopamine, give purpose, and help us feel alive again.
And never underestimate the power of laughter. Laughter, whether through a comedy movie, funny family stories, or shared silly moments is the quickest way to generate endorphins and heal tension.
In truth, a DOSE of happy chemicals a day can keep family conflict and even the doctor away.
It doesn't cost money. It doesn't need hours of planning. All it needs is presence and awareness.
So start today. Offer a hug. Give a compliment. Dance a little. Laugh a lot. And watch your family transform - one small happy moment at a time.
REFLECT
- When was the last time you hugged someone in your family just to show love?
- What simple rituals could you create to bring more joy into your home?
REMEMBER
It doesn't take grand gestures to build a happy family. It takes consistent, small acts of joy.
TAKEAWAYS
- Joy is chemistry and we can generate it
- Stress happens, but healing can too
- Families can rewire together
