DO WHAT’S IN YOUR CONTROL

DO WHAT’S IN YOUR CONTROL

Letting go of the rest with grace and grounding

There are phases in family life that feel unusually heavy.
Nothing major has gone wrong but nothing feels quite right either.
Small tasks begin slipping.
Conversations become tense.
Emotions run high.
You find yourself shouting at people you love… or simply shutting down.

You wonder, “What’s happening to us?”

You’re doing your best. You care deeply. You’re trying hard to fix things.
But things still feel stuck. Repetitive. Out of sync.
And no matter how hard you try, the more you force control - the more everything seems to go wrong.

The Turning Point

I remember going through such a time myself. I was stretched between family, work, and personal responsibilities.

Everything I did came from a place of love - but even then, I saw things falling apart.

One of the biggest challenges at the time was getting my US O1 visa processed. We had hired an attorney and were doing everything we could to get it sorted. But something or the other kept getting delayed:

  • One week it was my travel.
  • Another week, my partner’s schedule.
  • Sometimes, documents needed to be redone or translated. The entire process dragged on for months.

I was frustrated. Tired. And feeling helpless.

That’s when my mentor shared a simple, yet life-changing insight.

A Practice of Surrender and Action

He said, “Rahul, make two lists.”

  1. Everything that is not in your control.
  2. Everything that is in your control.

He then said something I’ll never forget:

“Accept what’s not in your control. Take full charge of what is. And leave the rest to time.”

It sounded simple. But when I sat down and made those lists, I had a surprising realization:

Some items showed up on both lists.
For example, the visa result was not in my control but my effort, my follow-ups, my communication, and my consistency, absolutely were.

So, I stopped stressing about the outcome and started focusing deeply on the process.
Every follow-up I made was intentional.
Every task I was assigned, I completed without delay.
I stayed in touch with my partners. I stopped blaming. I stopped panicking.

And guess what?
Things started moving. Slowly. Steadily. In flow.

Bringing This Home

This same wisdom applies to family life.
Sometimes, your child is going through emotional pain.
They’re withdrawing, feeling low, or facing a challenge they can’t articulate.

You cannot force them to heal.
You cannot rush their growth.
You cannot solve their emotions for them.

But here’s what is in your control:

  • Being present.
  • Offering non-judgmental space.
  • Saying the right words at the right time.
  • Giving them time to process.

That’s the formula.
Presence + Patience + Process.

You don’t fix people.
You hold space while they fix themselves.

REFLECT

  • Are you over-focusing on things outside your control?
  • What actions are actually within your influence right now?
  • What would shift if you gave your energy only to the second list?

REMEMBER

When life feels overwhelming, don’t try to manage everything. Manage your zone.

Control your actions, your words, your response and leave the rest to unfold in divine time.

Trust me, that’s not helplessness. That’s power.

TAKEAWAYS

  1. Don’t waste energy on things beyond your control, channel it into what you can do.
  2. Accepting what you can’t change isn’t giving up; it’s growing up.
  3. Progress begins the moment you stop fixing the world and start showing up in it with calm, clarity, and consistency.
